“Owning a pet is a gift.  It has always filled my heart and almost brought me to tears to see animals work their magic.  Whether it’s watching a racehorse run or a wild stallion fly across a meadow, burying my face into the fur of a purring cat and drink it’s contentment, or watching a dog, cat or horse giving birth and caring for its newborns.  To look into my lab’s eyes as he looks at me adoringly as no one else in the world could.  To watch my children learn about kindness and sympathy through pet ownership.  These things are why I own pets.”

“I love my cats, Herschel & Dallas, a lot.  They are so needy of my attention but don’t need it every second.  We do the morning brushing and the nighttime drink from the sink when I brush my teeth.  But my favorite is Nellie, my Boston Terrier.  We are so alike; full of energy and happy to work hard, and we love to snuggle at night when we are too tired to do anything else!”

“I came into veterinary medicine in a rather roundabout way.  My undergraduate studies were in areas totally unrelated to veterinary medicine.  However, I did have a strong science background and had always been interested in medicine.  Always in the back of my mind was the desire to pursue a medical career.  Having always been intrigued by the unique human-animal bond and experiencing that myself with my rescued Dachshunds, I chose veterinary medicine.  With the never ending support of my husband and the rest of my family, I undertook the challenge of first getting accepted into vet school by taking all the necessary classes & getting the work experience and then the rigors of a veterinary student... a “mature student” as we were called.”
                                                        Dr. Long

Dr. Long is a Connecticut native but has lived in North Carolina for many years.  She and her husband, Charles, share their home with many “Longdogs” - dachshunds and terrier mixes.  Having both very old and very young dogs keeps them busy!  Dr. Long spends her free time gardening and landscaping their older home, hiking and walking, and reading mystery/suspense novels.  She and Charles also enjoy travelling and are working on visiting all the National Seashores and many of the National Parks.
